The Art Of (Lego) Architecture -- Open Through December 31, 2008
It takes between 15,000 and 50,000 LEGO pieces and about two months to put together one of Adam Reed Tucker’s small-scale skyscraper re-creations. And opening October 11, Tucker will be bringing many of these creations to Discovery Center Museum where they will make their world debut as a museum exhibition.
The Art of Architecture exhibition honors the past, present, and future of architecture while combining the worlds of architecture, engineering, and construction using LEGO bricks. The exhibition celebrates famous architects and movements that have shaped the environment around us. Pieces include the Sears Tower, John Hancock Center, Empire State Building, St. Louis Arch, Jin Mao Tower, and Trump International Hotel & Tower, to name a few.
Visitors can meet Tucker on opening day and learn some tips from the pro as he works on a new piece for his collection, Aqua. In addition to creating LEGO skyscrapers of their own, visitors can use a variety of other construction materials to create their own works of art.
Tucker is an architectural artist from Chicago. He has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, Daily Herald, and North Shore Magazine. Several of Tucker’s souvenir scale LEGO kits will be available for purchase in the Gift Shop! The Art of Architecture is open through December 31, 2008 and is sponsored locally by William Charles, Ltd. and the Northern Illinois Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Crime Lab Detectives -- Opens May 16, 2009

The story begins…the Johnsons had been away on vacation. The neighbor noticed a broken window and went to the house to check it out. Things had been moved and removed from inside the house – signs someone had been there. But who? It’s up to you to solve the mystery at Crime Lab Detectives – Discovery Center’s newest traveling exhibit opening May 16 and running through summer. Crime Lab Detectives is sponsored by OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center.
Crime Lab Detectives takes visitors into the popular world of crime labs and detective work. Visitors will scrutinize evidence left behind while recording their findings in a Detective Notebook. After perusing the crime scene, visitors will be challenged by the lab activities as they work to decide which of the five prime suspects committed the crime.
Crime Lab Detectives lets guests be the real Sherlock Holmes as they examine clues such as fingerprints, hair and DNA. From tire marks left outside the crime scene to a cloth fiber on a picket fence, visitors will learn how to collect, sort and analyze evidence and data. Visitors can work individually or as a family to gather clues. The evidence is right before your eyes. Can you solve the crime?
