Position Overview:

The Sci Teen Volunteer program provides fun opportunities for teens ages 14-17 to support their community by assisting
museum staff and visitors, while also helping volunteers gain career skills, fulfill service hour requirements, and explore
different career paths. Sci Teen Volunteers should be friendly, enjoy working with children, and eager to learn!

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with Family Friday events including helping to set up and tear down event materials, run an activity
    station and interact with families during the event, etc.
  • Assist the Education staff with summer camp classes
  • Prepare materials for events and camps
  • Assist Discovery Guides and other Discovery Center staff as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills/Experience

  • Must be 14-17 years old
  • Have an interest in science and/or working with children
  • Have a positive, friendly attitude and a collaborative spirit
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, active environment with the ability to adapt to change
  • Must be able to commit to volunteering 50 hours over the summer

 

Work Environment

Volunteers may have to stand and walk for the majority of their volunteer shift while maintaining friendly and courteous
interactions with museum staff and visitors in a moderately noisy environment. This position requires bending,
occasional lifting from floor to waist, reaching at shoulder height, and occasional reaching above shoulder height to
access supplies. Must be able to push, pull and lift up to 40 lbs. Additionally, this position requires the following:

  • Work primarily indoors and occasionally outdoors during seasonal events
  • Conforming to dress code including wearing of uniform shirts and apron
