Discovery Center Museum named a Top Ten Children's Museum in a new book by National Geographic Society


Rockford’s children’s science museum only Illinois site included in top ten

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Discovery Center Museum announced today that appears in a new book published by the National Geographic Society. The book, The Ten Best of Everything: Families, names Discovery Center to its list of “Top Ten Children’s Museums.” The book serves as a terrific guidebook for families wanting to explore the world outside their home.

Discovery Center was selected from more than 200 U.S. museums designed for children. It was the only Illinois museum to appear on the list.

The listing highlights Discovery Center’s:


Rock River Discovery Park, the first community-built outdoor science park in the nation.


Air And Flight gallery, with exhibits demonstrating the four basic principles of flight.


Rounding out the top ten are: Boston Children’s Museum; Strong National Museum of Play; Brooklyn Children’s Museum; Children’s Museum of Indianapolis; Madison Children’s Museum; Children’s Museum of Houston; Minnesota Children’s
Museum; and the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose.

A non-profit organization, Discovery Center has, over its 28-year history, established itself as a leader in the Rockford, regional, and national education communities. The Museum is also seen as a key player in the Rockford and Northern Illinois tourism markets.
